Thematic area: Energy and Water Supply

BRIEF SUMMARY OF OVERALL PROJECT WITH THE MAIN OBJECTIVES

The objective of the JoRIEW project is to reinforce the cooperation capacities of Jordanian research centres by promoting closer scientific collaboration with a number of ERA located research centres and universities. The JoRIEW project help to structure and enhance S&T cooperation in areas of common interest, such as research system integration, integrated energy and water planning, development of water supply systems that can be powered by intermittent renewable energies, in particular flexible pumping techniques and reverse osmosis desalination technology, where joint research efforts could bring common solutions and mutual benefits. It opens a new chapter of scientific cooperation between the EC and Jordan, an important partner in the EU's neighbourhood policy. Improving Jordanian capacities in research will be achieved through following activities:
  • Networking of Jordanian and EU research centres in view of disseminating scientific information, identifying partners and setting up joint research
  • Developing training modules to build competency and facilitate the Jordanian participation in FP7 regarding energy and water research
  • Developing the Jordanian research strategy for sustainable and renewable energy and water desalination in order to increase its scope, in particular its regional coverage and to improve its responses to the socio-economic needs of Jordan and other countries in the region

THE PROBLEM AREA ADDRESSED

Jordan is a country that lacks natural energy resources especially that of the petroleum resources. In addition, Jordan is also considered one of the poorest countries in terms of water share for its citizens. These combined problems may be addressed in solution that relies on schemes that are based on integrated energy and water planning. Development of such schemes will have water supply systems that can be powered by intermittent renewable energies, in particular flexible pumping techniques and reverse osmosis desalination technology. JoRiew assists Jordanian researchers to enhance research capacity through joint research with several European Research Centers which eventually will bring common solutions and mutual benefits to all.

DESCRIPTION OF THE ACHIEVEMENTS

The JoRiew Project has successfully completed several milestones:
1- A conference was held at the Hashemite University that included speakers from various part of the world, especial from European and Arab countries as well as researchers from Jordan. The theme of the conference is around Renewable Energy and Water Supply
2- Two training sessions with each being a two-day long that were held at the Hashemite University. The aim of these training sessions was to educate and train researchers about collaborative research opportunities within the FP7 and Horizon 2020 with emphasis on renewable energy and water supply.
3- Completion of several research visits (mobility) by Jordanian researchers to several European centers.
4- Establishment of a website for the project JoRiew for the aim of exchanging information mainly in the area of renewable energy and water supply.
5- Initiation of projects between Jordanian and European researchers with the hope of possible funding from the EC.

PUBLICATIONS AND OTHER AVAILABLE DOCUMENTATION

Based on the visits made by several Jordanian Researchers, several technical papers resulted from these visits. I can supply you with that information at a later date. Also, I can supply you with papers that were accepted and presented at the JoRiew conferece.
