BRIEF SUMMARY OF OVERALL PROJECT WITH THE MAIN OBJECTIVES

J-ERA Center: The National Center for Research and Development (NCRD) as a Center of Excel-lence for EU-Jordan S&T Cooperation: Towards Jordan’s Integration into ERA
Goals:
• To provide training to NCRD staff and researchers to build capacities in EU project man-agement.
• To strengthen links between research teams of NERC and their EU counterparts.
• To initiate joint R&D initiatives in the area of renewable energy through partnering events and facilitating mobility of researchers.
• To enhance firm sustainable implementation of the enhanced capacities at NCRD.
• To promote the centre’s international competiveness and its response to socio-economic challenges.
• To enhance the institutional development strategy.
• Positioning NCRD as a Centre of Excellence for EU-Jordan RTD cooperation.

THE PROBLEM AREA ADDRESSED

Jordan's economy has been facing many energy crises through many years now, oil prices continue to rise and gas imports from Egypt continue to reduce, creating a situation that requires a return to subsidized fuel prices. The current energy problem in Jordan comes from two directions:
  • The first is high crude oil prices along with stopping the policy of liberalizing prices for basic pe-troleum products in Jordan, namely gasoline, diesel, kerosene and cooking gas.
  • The second is the frequent interruption and scarcity in the supply of Egyptian natural gas for gen-erating 80% of electricity needs. This necessitated generating power with heavy fuel oil and diesel to meet demand, and these derivatives are very expensive.
It is time that we realize that Jordan tops in renewable energy, in Jordan the sun always shins, and the wind always blows, there are many good reasons to depend on renewable energy sources. If we capture the energy in sunshine and wind, we can use it to heat our homes and run our cars, comput-ers and TVs. Renewable energy is abundant in Jordan, when each new day dawns, it brings with it a fresh supply of renewable energy that will not stop.

DESCRIPTION OF THE ACHIEVEMENTS

Considering the NCRD is a center of excellence in the region in renewable energy.
A great opportunity was created for the Jordanian researchers to mingle and meet their European counterparts and discuss a mutual research interests in the future and to sustain the project objec-tives.
