BRIEF SUMMARY OF OVERALL PROJECT WITH THE MAIN OBJECTIVES

The European Council after the United Nation Climate Change Conference in Bali December 2007, set two ambitious key targets: a reduction of 20% of greenhouse gases(GHG) by 2020; and a 20% share of renewable energies in EU energy consumption by 2020. In order to face this new chal-lenge, this project, will showcase a multidisplinary approach for biowaste to be used as a feedstock and algae as a catalyst for producing biofuels.
Project objectives:
• The use of macroalgae as an interface between biowaste and energy production to allow a direct utilization of biowaste.
• Macroalgae can be directly used in biodigestors to produce energy without the need of mix-ing with other cereal crops.
• Pre-cultivation of protoplasts in an incubator permit the acceleration of cell regeneration, diminishing the life-cycle of macroalgae.
• Optimization of the two phase anaerobic digestion processes.
• Biogas upgrade to high quality vehicle fuel.
